With French Open starting at the end of this month, we thought it would be a great time to offer a Tennis Betting Tutorial. Not many African gamblers know how to bet on tennis – it’s a sport that garners viewership mostly on their big events - even those that don’t like strawberries and cream, but viewership falls for the “other” tournaments.
The French Open does well in terms of viewership in the French speaking countries of Africa and for those that know how to bet on tennis, it offers another wagering opportunity in the slower summer months prior to the start of the football season in August.
Big statement made Monday night by Golden State, who crushed Cleveland by 34 points and put up 104 points through three quarters. Things went so bad for the Cavs that they were clearly flustered, including JR Smith receiving a flagrant-2 foul which accompanies an automatic ejection. Golden State has now swept the season series with the Eastern Conference frontrunners, and will no doubt remain a heavy favorite to win it all this year as long as the Warriors stay relatively healthy.
That victory helped Golden State keep a slim two-game lead over the surging San Antonio Spurs for first place in the Western Conference, and while both of those teams are still unbeaten at home this season, Golden State has played five more road games than the Spurs, so that two-game lead is a bit misleading. Warriors now 19-4 straight up on the road, which is easily the best road record in the NBA. More importantly, Golden State is a profitable 15-7-1 against the pointspread in those away games.
The final week of the season is like no other in MLB Baseball. The rosters are expanded, so the best players aren’t always taking the field. Many teams have been eliminated from postseason contention, and don’t have much motivation to win.
Some of the teams that have clinched a playoff spot will be setting their playoff pitching rotation in order, so many pitching changes occur. And for the few teams still battling for one of the remaining playoff spots, these teams have inflated lines as the majority of the betting public looks to back the teams in “must win” spot.
There are some strategies and MLB betting tips we can use during this final week, however. Some teams that are out of playoff contention can still be motivated by other benchmarks. One of those benchmarks is the .500 record, so a team that is right at, or just below .500 tend to play better in the final week of the season. This year, Boston and Cleveland would quality for that type of motivation.
After starting the season with five consecutive victories – all via shutout – Manchester City finally broke their streak. Not only did they allow West Ham to find the back of the net twice, they lost their first match of the season (despite being listed as a -375 favorite – the biggest favorite on the board last weekend).
Despite that loss, City is still atop the table, two points better than Manchester United, who scored three times to beat Southhampton. Manchester City is a -115 favorite this Saturday against Tottenham, while United is a -415 favorite to get past Sunderland. That -415 line is the highest in the English Premier League this weekend.
One of the biggest story lines this weekend was Chelsea’s 2-0 win vs. Arsenal, as the defending champs had started the season poorly with just one victory through their first five matches. Coming against a solid Arsenal team should boost the confidence of the reigning champs, and perhaps they will start to play at the high level they did a season ago.
While the English Premier League is easily the most recognizable European Soccer League in the United State, it is far from the only one and arguably not even the best the world’s sport has to offer. According to the UEFA Coefficient, Spain’s La Liga is the top league in the world.
The problem with La Liga, however, is that it is very top heavy. Real Madrid and Barcelona (and more recently Athletico Madrid) have completely set themselves apart from the rest of the competition, which regularly leads to extremely high betting lines throughout the season.
When two of these three teams meet up, it’s a must-see game. This weekend, Barcelona is a +125 favorite against Athletic Madrid (+240) in what should be one of the better matchups of the season. But that uneven field also leads to big betting lines. This online sportsbook lists Real Madrid as a big -350 favorite against Espanyol – a 9:1 underdog, and those types of big odds runs rampant throughout the year.
After the first week of College Football action, some teams have established themselves as legitimate contenders (Ohio State, Alabama) while others were less-than-impressive and still have some things to work out (Baylor, Oregon).
Like last weekend, the early non-conference schedule features a ton of lopsided matchups and heavy favorites. There are, however a few marquee games on this weekend’s slate, highlighted by the first matchup of top ten teams when Oregon visits East Lansing to take on Michigan State.
These teams met last year, with Oregon scoring a 46-27 home win as a 14-point favorite. That was a tough beat for MSU backers, as the Spartans held a nine-point lead late in the third quarter before Oregon rallied to score the last 28 points of the game.
Last week we broke down the contenders in the NFC, noting the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks were the top two choices to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
We were curious to see what impact the non-contact, season-ending injury of Jordy Nelson had on the NFC Future odds, not only with the Packers but also the Seahawks. After all, Nelson is coming off a Pro Bowl season in which he led his team in targets, catches, yards, yards per game, yards per catch, and touchdowns. Clearly the top receiving weapon on a Super Bowl contender is a huge loss.
Last Tuesday, a reports was going around that Michael Vick may no longer be a free agent as he is suppose to have been talking to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The deal was that he was going to be the Steelers' number 2 quarterback to Ben Rothelisburger because Bruce Gradkowsky had suffered a dislocated finger.
Well, some people just don't want to see Michael Vick as a Steeler because he had been incarcerated due to holding illegal dog fighting matches on his property back in 2007. Even though Vick is a great quarterback, has paid his dues and has been straight ever since, it is still not enough for some people.
Many of my friends often ask me about NFL Preseason betting and how difficult it is to bet on a winner. Some even ask whether it is worth betting on as they are no real statistics for the NFL Preseason since coaches will not risk their best players on a game that is more or less a practice game.
Sure, you have lots of sportsbooks that will send out great NFL Preseason bonuses and promotions in the hope that you will start betting now but is it really worth it?
When it comes to the preseason, its pretty much a 50/50 chance for a win unless we are talking about a very poor team laying the number one team in the league and even then, the odds will usually be so close that you might as well go to a Las Vegas Casino and put everything on black.
