After starting the season with five consecutive victories – all via shutout – Manchester City finally broke their streak. Not only did they allow West Ham to find the back of the net twice, they lost their first match of the season (despite being listed as a -375 favorite – the biggest favorite on the board last weekend). Despite that loss, City is still atop the table, two points better than Manchester United, who scored three times to beat Southhampton. Manchester City is a -115 favorite this Saturday against Tottenham, while United is a -415 favorite to get past Sunderland. That -415 line is the highest in the English Premier League this weekend. One of the biggest story lines this weekend was Chelsea’s 2-0 win vs. Arsenal, as the defending champs had started the season poorly with just one victory through their first five matches. Coming against a solid Arsenal team should boost the confidence of the reigning champs, and perhaps they will start to play at the high level they did a season ago. This online sportsbook certainly think so, installing Chelsea as a -145 favorite vs. Newcastle, who with just two points is in a dead heat with Sunderland at the bottom of the table. Arsenal is favored to bounce back against Leicester City, laying -125 odds to emerge victorious. Leicester drew 2-2 with Stoke City last weekend, and coupled with West Ham’s 2-0 victory they have fallen to fourth – one spot out of automatic qualification for the Champion’s League Group Stage. West Ham moved up to third – even at 12 points with Leicester but ahead of them with a +2 better goal differential. The closest matches on the board in the eyes of the online sportsbooks have Stoke City a +155 choice against Bournemouth (+180), while Watford is +150 against Crystal Palace (+195 on Sunday). There were only two draws last weekend, after having just one draw the week prior. Soccer bettors typically don’t like to bet on a draw as it hurts their rooting interest, but draws tend to offer decent payouts and pretty good line value. In week 3, for example, there were five draws out of the ten matches, which would have paid a handsome profit. We’ll be back next week to take a look at some of the interesting betting lines for Week 8 of English Premier League action.
