With French Open starting at the end of this month, we thought it would be a great time to offer a Tennis Betting Tutorial. Not many African gamblers know how to bet on tennis – it’s a sport that garners viewership mostly on their big events - even those that don’t like strawberries and cream, but viewership falls for the “other” tournaments.
The French Open does well in terms of viewership in the French speaking countries of Africa and for those that know how to bet on tennis, it offers another wagering opportunity in the slower summer months prior to the start of the football season in August.
There are a few different ways to bet on tennis. Unlike virtual sports betting or paris virtuels in french, where the odds are already set, the most common wagering type is on the moneyline – just picking which player will win the matchup. The player listed as the favorite will have a minus sign next to the odds, while the underdog will have a plus sign.
For example, if Andy Murray is a -150 favorite against Rafael Nadal as a +130 underdog, then for every $150 wagered on Murray will return $100 of profit if he wins. Every $100 wagered on Nadal would return $130 of profit if he wins.
According to John who is a sports betting software programmer, you can also pick the winner of the tournament before it starts with a tennis future wager. Another betting option some online sportsbooks offer is a pointspread on how many sets a player will win by. This helps in lopsided matchups with heavy favorites.
If the favorite is listed as a 1.5 set favorite, then they would need to win the match by at least two sets in order to cover the spread. For example, if Andy Murray was -1.5, -200 in his opening round matchup and won 4-sets-to-1, then for every $200 wagered he would return a $100 profit. One reason the daily gambler should learn how to bet on tennis is because it’s not only another wagering option, but one that has early start times. Just like afternoon MLB games that have heavier action as a distraction from the work day, betting on tennis offers action when there isn’t much else going on.
